So, your child’s first visit is under their belt. They are now seeing our caring Federal Way family dentist every six months for their check-ups and dental cleanings.
What to expect and look for:
- By age two to three, all primary teeth should have erupted and be present in your child’s mouth.
- Primary teeth are not only important for chewing and speech, but they are also “space-keepers” for permanent teeth.
- Depending on your child’s rate of caries(cavities), bitewing x-rays will be taken every one to two years.
- We will review home-care with you and your child. (Brushing, flossing, diet.)
- For children under the age of 8 or 9, please check your child’s teeth each time they brush and possibly re-brush as needed.
- Parents, at this age, its is better for you to floss your child’s teeth.
All these things instill a foundation of life-long good habits for your child.
Dental Sealants:
- The pits and grooves on teeth can be very deep.
- Sealants flow into these pits and grooves and seal them.
- The plaque and bacteria that cause cavities can no longer collect in those grooves.
Fluoride:
- Dr. Lee recommends topical fluoride for children and adults as well.
- It can remineralize the enamel and keep cavities form developing.
- Federal Way has fluoridated water, so supplements are not recommended.
- If you live in an outlying area, call your water district to find out if you have fluoridated water.
- If you use filtered water, check the specifications to see if fluoride is a mineral that is left after filtration.
If you have questions, we have great resources to answer them for you
Dr. Lee also monitors the position of teeth and will recommend a referral to an orthodontist in the Federal Way area if needed. Many advances have been made in the area of orthodontics, and early diagnosis is huge in making treatment easier for your children!
